We are in the midst of an exciting collaboration with Detroit-based composer Harriet Steinke -- she is writing a multi-section work for us called Listening for Bells. You can hear our performance of Part A of the Listening for Bells here. Stay tuned for more sections of this beautiful work coming soon!
Virago is an improvising sextet based out of Ann Arbor, MI. We were formed in 2018 at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance.
Virago's mission is to inspire and empower diverse audiences, especially women, through bold and creative risk-taking. We aim to challenge the definition and expectation of chamber music performance by incorporating a wide range of musical influences, improvisation, and inter-arts collaborations, performing in non-traditional concert spaces, and celebrating diversity. Additionally, we want to enhance the public perception of chamber music as well as inspire young artists to take their own risks in chamber music performance, improvisation, and inter-arts collaboration.
